Today, Mike takes a quick look at the Warhammer 40k: Space Marine demo. This short demo provides about 15 minutes of gameplay, split between two missions. Read on for some extra thoughts and information on the game.
Being a fan of the series, this latest Warhammer title somehow managed to pass under my radar. Jumping into the demo, I didn’t know what to expect beyond knowing the game was a third person shooter as opposed to a real-time strategy. After a quick trip into the options to max out the graphics and to take a peek at the controls, I was ready to jump into the first of the two available missions.
Right from the start, I was pleasantly surprised at how good the game looked and felt when you consider this is Relics second foray into the shooter genre. Despite being a real-time strategy series for the past five years, playing WH40k: Space Marine gave the same feeling I have been accustomed to. The fights where literally the same as seen in the previous Dawn of War games, the only difference was that I was controlling a single unit as opposed to a squad.
Like Dawn of War the fights are fast paced, action packed and give you that almighty unstoppable feeling. Rapidly transitioning between shooting and melee combat is effortless and works extremely fun. What make the combat work so well are the relatively simple but powerful controls that allow you to do exactly what you want. While it sounds like the perfect combat scenario, the camera can be somewhat of a letdown. When entering tight quarters you can easily lose track of what is going on as the camera will easily get stuck in some corner or a nearby object.
As much as I can praise the mechanics and immersion, the rest of the game is still up in the air. The demo only provided a glimpse of what to expect at the gameplay level. Some components like the customization and multiplayer where not present in this demo and until the game comes out we will have to wait and see. Until the games release, the basic gameplay mechanics seem quite promising but will the rest deliver? We will have to wait and see.
